In the quiet and solitude of the Headmaster’s office, Severus Snape sat at the desk, his head in his hands. Outside the grounds of Hogwarts, the war was proceeding just as Voldemort wanted; his supporters were flocking to his sides, the Ministry was infiltrated and corrupt, and Harry Potter was on the run, just barely eluding the Death Eaters.
And here was Snape, wondering how in the world he had managed to find himself in such a convoluted position. He allowed his greasy black hair to fall in front of his eyes, glaring with contempt at the wood fibers of the desk. Secretly – and these days, everything Snape did had a secret motive – he loathed the position he’d been appointed, sitting in the chair of the very man he respected and been forced to murder. But at least here he could attempt to protect the Hogwarts students, considering the newly appointed bloodthirsty teachers, the Carrows. Most of the time, he was able to prevent them from blatantly torturing a select few. Most of the time.
Protect the students. Three in particular came to Snape’s mind at that. He lifted his head to stare hollowly at the smiling portrait of Dumbledore hanging just in front of him. Snape already knew he wouldn’t survive to see the war end. If by some miracle, Potter and the rest managed to actually overthrow the Dark Lord, Snape would certainly not be allowed to live. The entire wizarding world despised him, arguably more so than Voldemort; he had, after all, murdered their primary beacon of hope and safety. Their hatred didn’t bother him very much at all, though. He’d grown tired of living. He kept going simply because of Dumbledore’s orders and his own fervent desire to keep Harry Potter alive.
It was a shame, he thought with an ire smile. He could barely even stand the boy. Potter was not only the spitting image of his father, he embodied every trait of James that Snape despised. Headstrong, arrogant, superior, and courageous to the point of stupidity. He rarely thought of Potter as Lily’s son; the image of James staring back at him in miniature form was too strong. Though he refused to admit it to even himself, Snape had on several past occasions watched Potter while in Potions class, isolating him in his mind’s eye until he could only see Lily and her beautiful green eyes. And then he remembered his purpose in leading this double life.
Protecting her son was the only way Snape could atone for all the wrong he’d done. He still felt, after all this time, that it was his fault Lily had perished. He’d been the one to hear Trelawney’s prophecy; he was the one who went running to Voldemort the minute he’d heard. How could he have known Voldemort would take it to mean the Potter family?
“I’m sorry...” he mumbled under his breath, covering his eyes with his hands, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry…” The portrait of Dumbledore watched sympathetically as Snape shook with grief. Finally, when his quiet sobs died down, Snape withdrew his wand, making a choked noise as he spoke the incantation.
“Expecto patronum!”
A few seconds later, a doe appeared in the room, shimmering with an ethereal light, walking about the room. Snape reached out a hand, shakily touching the glowing form, and the doe nuzzled him. In the quiet of the Headmaster’s office, this was all he had left to comfort him now.
